Jack Peñate, Chairlift, and The XX....oh my!
Saw an amazing concert at Central Park Summerstage last night. Some British bands are head scratchers, yeah. I thought that Jake Penate was going to be just okay, since he was the opener, but he blew me away. He's really passionate and soulful, the audience warmed up to him after the first song.
Chairlift is from Williamsburg, Brooklyn actually, but the way they sound you'd think they were English. The lead singer's voice is incredible. Very out there, like she's haunting a house, but more ethereal. Plus, she's totally gets into her performance, dances and everything, you can tell she loves it. At one point she started singing, but stopped because the guitarist was off. She said she wanted it to be perfect for us. She looked incredible up there. I think I have a crush on her :)
The XX didn't go on for about half an hour for some reason, but once they did, spectacular. I wasn't familiar with them going in, but def a fan now. Can't believe they're all 20-21, the lead singer told us he just turned it, so now he can drink onstage :P Amazing band tho, very low and subdued, but they somehow mix this energy in there that keeps them from sounding depressing a la Morrissey. Love their harmonies. Plus, they played an encore. Def would see that lineup again, and this time would pay for it :)
I do have to note that this is the second time I've been to Summerstage when it started raining. Last time was for Explosions In The Sky and they were spectacular. Starting to look at the drippage as a good sign.

school, a concert, and money
Okay, I shouldn't be stressing. School starts in about a month and aside from a bill I received for tuition, I have no actual means of paying for it right now. Granted, I haven't gotten award letter yet (thanks procrastination!). But still, the worrying part of me thinks that all my work trying to get into school is for naught since I won't be able to afford it. I can' think like that though, negative thoughts create negative energy. I'm creating what I actually am afraid will happen.

I have to say, Chairlift was a highlight for me. The other two were great. But just the soaring vocals of Chairlift's lead singer sounded like some freaky sort of haunted house. Plus, her very attractive appearance belied all that. This girl was incredible and she can play the synthesizer. While there, I met these two kids from England, Lucy and Louis. Cool people. They're staying in NY for a week until they go back. Would love to go over there. That's one of my goals to head to London. I'm most likely going to get my Master's over there in Psychology or maybe Theater, but prob the former. I don't care what school it's in, well a decent one, buta s long as I can get to England everything will work itself out.
Also, presently in the running for a voice over gig that will pay $100. I know most VO experts scoff at that, but for me it's money in the bank, which I really need right now. I'm trying to take gigs that I want to do, but also pay, which is harder than it looks. I know some people think I'm a snob for turning up my nose at certain tasks, but the way I see it, why work a job you're not good at anyway? Money is like air or water, it's all around us. We can actually choose how we get it. Why walk 2 miles to a well when we can just go to the sink and get it. Easier isn't a bad thing. Going to have $100+ in cash though by Friday so I can sign up with this modeling agency online. Yeah, I know, me being a model is about the farthest thing I would expect myself to accomplish, but I'm thinking it's one of those it's so far fetched it just might work type of deals. It's gonna happen. The only thing stopping me is me and I'm a pushover.
